Leslie Robert Pullen
I am writing to report the death of LR (Les) Pullen at the age of 95.
Les was a legend of Addiscombe Cricket Club, serving it in many capacities from joining the club in 1946 until his retirement as a Trustee of the Joe Peirce Sports Field Trust in 2003.
He was encouraged to join Addiscombe, shortly after the second world war - his future wife Lorna Peirce was a niece of H.E 'Joe' Peirce, the club's great benefactor who purchased the ground and gifted it into Trust for the benefit of past, present and future members. Lorna's father had died young and his brother 'Joe' assumed responsibility for her as she grew up. As a consequence, Les observed the courtesy of asking 'Joe' for his niece’s hand in marriage. Typically 'Joe' gave his consent - subject to Les playing cricket for Addiscombe. The rest is history!
Les succeeded 'Joe' as 1st team captain in 1947 and served in this capacity until retiring in 1966, following the club's success in winning the Evening Standard Championship that year. He was Chairman of the club for many years and gave long service as a Trustee of the Joe Peirce Sports Field Trust - many as Chairman - until retiring in 2003 following his move to France.
A talented sportsman, Les featured in the Barnet team that won the FA Amateur Cup at Stamford Bridge in 1946. He also enjoyed considerable success on the cricket field where he also represented the Stoics.
Our very best wishes and condolences are conveyed to Les's sons, Andrew and Simon, and to his grandchildren at this difficult time.
