A Tribute to Richard Pullen
Profile:
Very sadly I find myself writing another obituary this time of someone far too young (63) to move on.
I first played with Richard in 1967 and always found him very good company, particularly over a beer or three. He was the son of our past President Les Pullen who captained the Club from 1947 to 1966 and a Godson of Joe Peirce another past President who purchased our delightful ground for the benefit of cricketers past and present.
I remember Richard as an enthusiastic batsman/wicketkeeper who travelled by public transport from the depths of Haywards Heath each week to play his cricket for Addiscombe. Not many cars in those days! I particularly recall a brilliant one handed diving catch for the 2nd X1 at Spencer. One of the best I can remember.
Richard played for Addiscombe until the early 1970's when he joined Haywards Heath where he enjoyed many happy years before moving to France with his parents in the mid 90's . It was there that he organised a local cricket team and achieved every batsman's ambition to score a hundred.....I actully think he got a couple.
Again I include an extract from Chris Whitehouse's pen picture of 1960's players which reads:
"Potential 1st X1 wicketkeeper and opening bat of promise. Longest travelling player, one of three brothers, sons of ex club skipper in our brighter days. Jovial character." Says it all!
Our condolences at this time have to go to Richard's parents, Les and Lorna for whom it must be a very sad time..
