Name: Richard Johnson
Nickname: Jonno, Dickie, Dr Johnson
How would you describe yourself as a player? An over-attacking all-rounder
Best cricket memory? Playing and contributing in the side that got Addiscombe back into the Surrey Championship
Most embarrassing cricketing moment? Early on in my time at Addiscombe, we played Cheam we were bowled out for 70-odd. I was the last man out and I let my frustrations get the better of me and chucked my bat as I was walking off.
I was young and naïve but was definitely poor form!
Favourite player/cricket hero?
As I am an all-rounder, I have picked two: Waqar Younis and Viv Richards.
Waqar Younis was the epitome of aggression sprinting to the wicket, hurling himself at the batsman with his slingy action. No bowler hit the stumps as much as Waqar at that time, and it was great to watch him bowl when I was growing up.
Viv Richards was ahead of his time if you look at cricketers today. He had a high strike rate, didn't wear a helmet and took on the fastest bowlers in the world and often won.
I like them both because they were counter attacking cricketers which sums up how I like to see the game played.
(Editor: watch some classic Waqar and King Viv action)
Favourite format to watch?
The first hour of a Test match.
This is when bowlers usually get the most help and you have the best battle between bat and ball. To see the best batsman come through the other side of that, or for a bowler to use their skills to get 2 or 3 wickets is what Test cricket is all about. Even if there is only 25 runs on the board, it is often the best to watch.
Best thing about Addiscombe CC?
Sandilands is a beautiful place to play cricket... Addiscombe shaped me growing up from playing Colts under Chris Whitehouse.
I made life-long friends and it was great playing with people like Mike, Mess, Butch, Addy, Crocy, Poults etc...and making a contribution myself to the 1st XI.
Playing for ACC is one of the things I miss now I live in Australia and I hope to see the Club thrive into the future.
