Name: Gavin Mander
Nickname: Moose, or Gav
How would you describe yourself as a player? Keen, but awful. I’m a better umpire -which says something about my playing prowess.
Best cricket memory? Cover driving the first ball of a match for four, and then being told by the umpire, one Angus Fraser, what a good shot it was.
Most embarrassing cricketing moment? Trying to repeat the cover drive next ball and being bowled.
Favourite player/cricket hero?
Can I have two?
Favourite player was Mark Butcher*. Wonderful to see a Croydon lad have such an outstanding Surrey and England career.
For my cricketing hero, I am going for Jim Laker, who holds just about the only cricketing record almost guaranteed not to be broken when he got 19 wickets in one Test match (1956 at Old Trafford v Australia, watch here). He was also the voice of TV commentary when I was young.
Favourite format to watch? Tests, preferably the Ashes.
What are you most looking forward to in the 2020 season? Getting any cricket in at all, given the current circumstances. Enjoying a pint with the poor batsmen I’ve just given out and knowing that they don’t mind really!

Gavin started umpiring colts matches, then moved onto the 4th XI and now umpires for the 2nd XI. He has completed his 1st and 2nd stage ECB umpire courses. We are very grateful to Gavin and all our umpires who give up their time to officiate our matches.
