60 seconds with Des Cumine, Vice-President

Jon Kuhrt22 May 2020 - 15:40

Former keeper, scorer and current Vice President shares his cricketing memories

'I was a mediocre wicket-keeper and blocking batsman but by being in the right place at the right time, I played with some very good players'
- Des Cumine

Name: Des Cumine

Nickname: Godber

How would you describe yourself as a player?
I dressed better than I ever played. I was a mediocre wicket-keeper and a blocking batsman whether batting at 1 or 11. I am pictured keeping wicket when I played for Kenley in a match to celebrate their centenary year in 1980. Through being in the right place at the right time, I was most fortunate to have played with, and against, some very good players.

Best cricket memory?
Being sat in the Lord's pavilion surrounded by former England Women cricketers watching England’s team beat India, World Cup Final in 2017.

Most embarrassing cricketing moment?
Batting with Martyn Bain at Old Whitgiftian's when he hit me with a straight drive.

Everybody fell over with laughter, especially my team mates. Well, apart from one, Bainy. He was not happy that I had denied him a certain boundary!

Favourite players/cricket hero?
As a youngster, it was Ken Barrington, in modern times Kumar Sangakkarra. Wicket-keepers Jack Russell and James Foster because they were the best glove-men. Today its Ben Foakes.

At Addiscombe, Martin Butcher (when he was trying), David Dyer who made it look so easy and Adnan Saleem because something could always happen with bat or ball.

Jan Britten, lovely person and ultra-competitive games player, would be a superstar in the current game, and Sarah Taylor possibly the best wicket-keeper standing up this century.

Favourite format to watch?
Five day Test cricket, what else is there?

Best thing about Addiscombe CC?

Always liked playing at Sandilands, pretty ground and short boundaries, especially when I was a Kenley player and we won! But I met some fantastic people at Addiscombe had some really fun times and many good memories, pity about the long drive home though.
