A 'proper Yorkie' who found his home at Addiscombe CC

'Having previously been an attacking top-order batsman, I found that getting the ball off the square was a problem when I re-started playing'
- Bryan Liddemore

Bryan is a former player, Chairman and President of Addiscombe CC. He is now a Vice-President of the club and is often to be found at Sandilands supporting ACC and recounting classic cricketing stories.

Originally from Keighley, Yorkshire, he is pictured above before the 1961 Keighley Charity Cup Final

Name: Bryan Liddemore

Nicknames : Lids, Lidders the Elder, Freddie Boswell (that’s a long story)

How would you describe yourself as a player?
I had stopped playing cricket in 1976 due to work pressures but I started playing again in the 1980’s. I was ferrying my son David (former ACC Colts skipper & 1st XI player) all over the south to play, so I felt I might as well play myself!

Having previously been an attacking top order batsman, I found that getting the ball off the square was a problem when I restarted! So I re-invented myself as a dogged opening bat for ACC's 3rd XI and opened the batting with Ian 'Wildy' Turner. I was also an occasional off spin bowler who enjoyed a number of 'fifers' and I was a pretty good fielder close to the wicket.

Best cricketing memory? In the old West Bradford League, I played for a team outside Keighley called Long Lee. Our arch enemies and local derby rivals were Ingrow. In one game we were put into bat on a seamer's paradise and were shot out for just 45!!!

At tea the opposition were 40 for 3 and obviously very confident of winning. After tea the track changed and we bowled them out for 43. It was an amazing match and yours truly took the winning catch. The fat lady singing comes to mind!!!

Most embarrassing cricketing moment? I played for Addiscombe 3rd XI in a match v Worcester Park played at Epsom College. I was the first of our batsmen to depart having scored a hard work 53 (Wildy also got 50 in our partnership).

As it was a very hot day I decided to go straight to the changing room for a cooling shower. Unbeknown to me, Epsom College was also hosting a wedding reception that day.

So there I was, showering in our changing room, when in walked a very posh lady dressed in wedding finery. Despite being confronted by me completely starkers before her, she was not fazed in the slightest. She merely said calmly “Excuse me, but I really must use the toilet”.

Favourite player? Sir Garfield Sobers. He could do everything with the bat and ball as well as being a great fielder. He would have walked into any Test side of the time based on any discipline. The complete cricketer.

Watch this video about Sobers' two 150's at Lord's

Favourite format to watch? Day 1 of a Test match or an ODI at Headingley, Leeds. I still retain a membership with Yorkshire CCC.

Best thing about ACC? The friendliness of officials, players and supporters.
