60 second interview: Barry Lineker: player, webmaster & Vice President

Jon Kuhrt1 Feb 2020 - 08:12

We hear the cricketing views of one of Addiscombe's key all-rounders - both on and off the pitch

'I always wanted to be John Edrich, he was short, tough and gritty for Surrey and England and had all the shots of a typical left-hander'
- Barry Lineker

Name: Barry Lineker

Nickname: Baz

Club Role: Player/Webmaster/Vice-President

How would you describe yourself as a player? Slow right arm bowler who swings and turns the ball both ways. Opening blocking batsman/middle order stroke player/tail end slogger. I am a flexible All-Rounder!

How long have you played at Addiscombe? 36 years

What is your best cricketing memory? In 2010, in a match v Old Emmanuel, I took 9-43 and then scored 50 not out. That was a good day!

What is your most embarrassing moment on a cricket pitch? It wasn't actually during a match but whilst at training, I got 'thrown under a bus' by a fellow player (not mentioning any names). He suddenly left the ball for me to field, causing me to fall over. I dislocated my shoulder and was out for the season after just two games (thanks Scott Benham).

If you could be any player, past or present, who would it be? I always wanted to be John Edrich. Short in stature, he was tough and gritty for both Surrey and England and had all the shots of a typical left hander. He scored over 100 first class centuries, averaged over 40 for England in Tests and scored a triple hundred. What more can you ask for? A true role model for any cricketer - unfortunately I came up short of being like him.
(Check out these highlights of John Edrich’s 175 v Australia at Lord’s in 1975)

Favourite format to watch: All of them!

Predictions for Addiscombe's 2020 season: Mid-table

Why is Addiscombe CC a great club to join? Great facilities and a great bunch of people to play cricket with.
